Event Description:

Editorial Commentary

Editorial Commentary is a scripted, seated speaking event similar to a talk radio segment, cable news segment or a podcast. Competitors deliver an opinionated analysis of a current, newsworthy issue, focusing on insight and perspective rather than simply summarizing events.

Speakers will perform from a seated position and read from a manuscript. Despite the use of a script, engaging delivery is essential—including vocal variation, facial expression, eye contact, and purposeful gestures.

Time Limit:

  • Minimum: 1:45
  • Maximum: 5:00
  • Speakers outside this window will be ranked one place lower

Judging Criteria

Judges should evaluate:

  • Delivery & performance
  • Clarity and strength of analysis
  • Use of evidence and research

Judges should not evaluate based on agreement with the speaker’s viewpoint.

This event is designed to encourage students to thoughtfully express perspectives on issues of public importance to them in their lives.

The objective of this event is a platform where students can practice sharing viewpoints with civility, decorum & persuasion skills.

What Is Commentary?

Commentary is an opinion-driven analysis that blends:

  • The personality and storytelling of Original Oratory
  • The topical awareness and evidence use of Extemporaneous Speaking

Think of it like a short podcast segment—conversational, engaging, and insightful. Strong speeches often incorporate:

  • Humor or wit
  • Personal anecdotes
  • Relevant statistics or examples

There is no single formula for success—effective speakers adapt tone and style to match the topic and audience.

Who Should Compete?

Commentary is ideal for students who:

  • Enjoy discussing current events, culture, or public issues
  • Can think flexibly and adapt to a variety of topics
  • Bring personality and voice into their speaking
  • Are willing to experiment and have fun with the format

Because topics can range widely—from pop culture to global issues—successful competitors are curious, adaptable, and well-informed.
