Charger Challenge
2026 — Draper, UT/US
Novice Extemp
Event Description:
Novice Extemporaneous Speaking
Novice Extemporaneous Speaking is an introductory limited-preparation event designed for first-year or developing competitors. The event builds foundational skills in research, organization, and persuasive public speaking through structured analysis of current events.
Event Format
Competitors will:
- Draw three current events questions
- Select one question to answer
- Receive 30 minutes of preparation time to research and organize a speech
- Deliver a 5–7 minute speech answering the selected question
Speeches are delivered without a manuscript, using limited notes if permitted by tournament rules.
What Makes It “Novice”
The novice division is designed to emphasize skill development over complexity. Compared to varsity levels, expectations are adjusted to support newer competitors:
- Accessible topics focused on major, widely covered news events
- Simplified research expectations, with fewer or more straightforward sources
- Judging emphasis on fundamentals, including structure, clarity, and delivery
- Developing analysis, rather than highly technical or policy-heavy argumentation
Speech Structure
A successful novice extemporaneous speech follows a clear and consistent format:
- Attention Getter — Engaging opening that introduces the topic
- Question Statement — Clear restatement of the prompt
- Preview — Outline of 2–3 main points
- Body — Organized arguments supported by cited evidence
- Conclusion — Direct answer to the question with a memorable closing
Judging Focus (Novice Division)
Judges should prioritize foundational speaking skills, including:
- Clear organization and logical progression of ideas.
- Effective transitions between points.
- Confident delivery, including eye contact and vocal control.
