Event Description:

Newscaster / Podcaster (Individual or Team Event)

Newscaster (also referred to as Podcaster) is a dynamic speaking event designed to simulate modern media broadcasting, where students take on the role of journalists, anchors, or content creators delivering a live or recorded news-style program. Content may be real, satirical, or entirely fictional, allowing for both informative reporting and creative storytelling.

Competitors may perform individually (“maverick”) or in teams. Each entry will present a 5–10 minute broadcast that mirrors the structure and pacing of contemporary news or podcast formats.

  • Content & Format:
Performances may include a mix of:
    • Headline news segments (serious or comedic)
    • Weather reports
    • Sports coverage
    • Interviews or desk segments
    • Commercials, advertisements, or sponsored bits
    • Feature stories or human-interest pieces
  • Students are encouraged to create a cohesive “show” with clear transitions, tone, and branding.
  • Editing & Production (Charger Challenge Specific):
    • Video editing is allowed and encouraged
    • Competitors may incorporate:
      • Pre-recorded clips
      • Visual graphics, overlays, or sound effects
      • Intro/outro sequences, theme music, or transitions
    • Performances may be live, pre-recorded, or hybrid, as long as the final product fits within the time limit
  • Performance Expectations:
    • Strong emphasis on delivery, timing, and professionalism
    • Clear characterization of roles (anchor, reporter, host, etc.)
    • Effective use of humor, tone, or narrative style depending on the concept
    • Cohesive structure that resembles a real broadcast or podcast
  • Judging Criteria:
    • Content quality and organization
    • Delivery and vocal performance
    • Creativity and originality
    • Production value and use of media/editing
    • Overall cohesion and audience engagement
