Event Description:

NOVICE IMPROMPTU

Event Overview

Novice Impromptu is the entry point into one of competitive speech’s most demanding and rewarding disciplines. Designed for first-year competitors, this event develops the foundational skills of spontaneous, organized thinking — preparing students for a lifetime of confident public communication.

Format: Competitors draw three prompts and select one, then have two minutes of preparation time before delivering a five-minute speech with no notes. Prompts may include quotes, objects, words, images, or abstract concepts. Speakers are expected to interpret their prompt creatively and build a structured, purposeful speech in real time.
Judging Criteria; Speeches are evaluated on: • Organization — Does the speech follow a clear, logical structure? • Content — Is the interpretation thoughtful and well-developed? • Delivery — Is the speaker composed, engaging, and articulate? • Relevance — Does the response meaningfully connect back to the prompt? What Makes a Great Impromptu Speech?

The best impromptu speakers don’t panic — they have a plan. A strong introduction that hooks the audience, two or three clearly developed points, and a memorable conclusion that ties back to the prompt will consistently outperform a rambling, disorganized response. Confidence, clarity, and a genuine point of view matter more than perfection.

A Note for Novices: Every great impromptu speaker started exactly where you are. This event rewards preparation through practice — not the ability to predict topics. The more speeches you give, the faster your mind learns to find structure in chaos. Embrace the challenge.
