The Value of this Tournament

Novice Students- This tournament is designed to help new debaters feel comfortable with going to tournaments and competing. It's very low stakes, and they will receive feedback to help them move forward.

Varsity Students (who can judge)- By judging at a tournament, varsity students can identify good/bad habits in competition, as well as reflect on best practices as they give feedback to the competitors.

Cost:
$25 per team + $5 per student (not individual entry)
Potential Fines:
$3 for each missing judge
$5 for each add/drop after 3:00pm on day of tournament

Event/ Tournament Specific Information

Debate Topics: Though this is a novice tournament, all debate events will use the normal, varsity topics.

Extemporaneous: This tournament's Extemp format combines U.S. and international topics. To help students prepare, prompts will be drawn exclusively from the following five themes: NATO, the United Nations, the Federal Reserve, the Supreme Court, and social media regulation. No prompt will fall outside these themes.
While in the prep room, students may write notes on an index card (provided to them) and bring it into the round for reference.

Impromptu: In order to help students prepare for the tournament, here are the themes of each round of Impromptu: Round 1- famous quotes, Round 2- kids tv shows/movies, Round 3- historical figures

AI Usage: In addition to all AI usage rules from NSDA and UHSAA, there will be further and/or clearer restrictions placed on this tournament:
Generative AI CANNOT be used to create any part of any speech in any event. You may use AI to help with research BEFORE the tournament, or during downtime in between rounds; but MAY NOT use it in round (including prep time) AT ANY POINT for ANY PURPOSE.

Judges

Varsity students can/should judge!
A judge is required for every 2 debate entries and every 6 speech entries.

Snacks will be available for purchase, but no meal. Please plan accordingly.

Awards

Due to the structure of this tournament (only 2-3 rounds), and the stated purpose of the tournament (giving feedback to new debaters), individual awards will not be given. Team awards will be awarded to schools that perform well.
