Richmond Public Schools Division Speech Scrimmage

WHERE:John Marshall High School, 4225 Old Brook Rd, Richmond, VA 23227

EVENTS: You’re invited! This speech and debate tournament will follow VHSL rules. We hope to provide a great local tournament option for Richmond Virginia schools especially!Schools are limited to 6 entries in each speech event.

Speech Categories: The following open speech categories will be offered (2 rounds each): Extemp, Impromptu, Original Oratory, Prose, Poetry, DI*, HI*, Storytelling, and Original Spoken Word**

Students MAY double-enter in all speech categories EXCEPT Extemp.

**NSDA Rules

JUDGES:

Entries may be waitlisted until judge burden is met. Each school is responsible for providing their own judges with the following quotas:

1 judge for every 5 Individual Events entries or fraction thereof

ENTRIES WAITLIST:

All entries are waitlisted upon registration. The waitlist is both to manage the size of the tournament - to make sure we don't run out of room, and to leverage judges. Entries will be admitted on a rolling basis as you enter judges to cover your burden. In most cases, waitlisted entries will admitted soon after the registration deadline.

DROPS:

Drops (for any reason) are permitted up to 48 hours before the tournament with no penalty. Drops within 48 hours require schools to honor the entry fees AND still require the original judging quota. If the original judging quota is not met upon registration, students may not be able to compete and there will be a $50 dropped judge fee.

SCHEDULE:

Registration: 5:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Dinner: 5:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Judges Meeting: 5:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Round 1: 6:15 pm –7:15 pm

Round 2: 7:15 pm - 8:15 pm

Closing: 8:15 pm - 8:30 pm

DINNER

Dinner for competitors, coaches, and judges is included.

AWARDS:

Ribbons will be given to the top 3 finishers in each category.
