Event Description:
Extemporaneous Speaking (Extemp) is a solo-speech event in which students have 30 minutes to prepare for a 7 minute (30 second grace period) speech. Students will do their prep in one room, then move to a separate room for their speech. As such, judges will have their competitors come in one at a time.
Extemp is divided into two topical distinctions: Domestic (or National) and Foreign (or International). Both speeches are judged the same way. The only difference between the two topics is the focus of the questions being asked. Extemp topics are based on current events, and are phrased like a question.
