Poetry (up to 6 minutes)

Perform a selection of poetry in a creative and personally unique manner. Selections can be original or from published authors/performers. Pieces should be performed with as much emotion, energy and movement as the participant feels adds meaning to the performance. It is the style of delivery rather than the piece that determines the category. While memorization is the goal, students may also choose to read the poem with the understanding that they will receive a lower score.

1. Choice of selection & appropriate introduction

2. General enthusiasm and sincerity

3. Use of text as a tool, not a crutch

4. Good eye contact with everyone in the room

5. Effective communication of ideas and feelings

6. Appropriate gestures and facial expressions

7. Correct pronunciation and clear enunciation

8. Overall effectiveness of interpretation

9. Vocal variety
