Event Rules

Unless otherwise noted below, we will follow current NSDA event rules. As a THSSDL state-bid tournament, we must follow applicable THSSDL requirements where they differ from NSDA rules. Those differences are noted below, along with rules for events not offered by the NSDA.

Improvisational Duet Acting

Improvisational Duet Acting is a two-person limited preparation event in which competitors create and perform an improvised scene based on a prompt.

Competitors will have 1 minute to prepare and up to 5 minutes to perform, with a 30-second grace period. The scene must contain only two characters, with both competitors sharing the dialogue. An introduction is optional, but the scene should establish and resolve a clear conflict. No costumes or makeup may be used; a table and/or two chairs may be used.

Each preliminary round will use a different type of prompt:

• Round 1: Person vs. Person

• Round 2: First Line/Last Line

• Round 3: Three Words

In the final round, competitors will draw three prompts, each containing a person, place, and event. They will have 30 seconds to select one prompt but may not discuss the prompt before beginning the scene.

Performances are evaluated on characterization, scene construction, entertainment, and use of the prompt.

Panther's Podium

Panther's Podium is a limited prep event in which students are given a real-world scenario and must step “up to the podium” to respond in character.

Students will draw three prompts each with a scenario requiring them to assume a role(e.g., a CEO addressing employees after a crisis, a mayor convincing citizens to support a new policy, or a teacher defending a controversial curriculum change). They will be given 30 seconds to choose one scenario. They will be given 5 minutes to prep a 4-6 minute presentation.

The goal is to deliver a coherent, persuasive, and engaging response in character while still demonstrating strong speech organization and delivery skills.

Prose

The time limit for Prose will be 10 minutes.

Storytelling

The time limit for Storytelling will be 8 minutes.

Television Broadcasting

Television Broadcasting is a limited preparation event in which students prepare and deliver a five-minute television newscast using a packet of news stories provided by the tournament.

Competitors will have 30 minutes to prepare their newscast. The provided materials may include international, national, state, local, human interest, sports, and weather stories. Competitors must select and edit material from the provided packet to create a logical, well-organized newscast. They may write their own transitions, opening, and closing, but may not use outside materials other than a dictionary.

The newscast should be delivered as though appearing on television, with particular attention to camera eye contact, vocal delivery, diction, organization, and professional newscaster presentation.

The performance should be 5 minutes. Performances more than 10 seconds over or under the time limit may be penalized.

Performances are evaluated on selection and organization of news stories, vocal control, diction, camera eye contact, adherence to time, poise, and overall performance.
